Earlier in the year I purchased a copy of a children’s book titled: ‘Only Horses Sleep with shoes on their feet’. Written by Mellissa Hapi with the goal to raise awareness of children who have to wear clubfoot shoes (Boots’n’Bar) at night-time, it tells the story of how everyone’s different when it’s time to sleep. In celebration of World Clubfoot Day on 3 June, I am giving away a copy of Mellissa’s book. This book is perfect for all families, not just those affected by clubfoot. Details on how to enter are at the bottom of this short review.
I read this beautiful book to both our 3 and 4 1/2 year old boys, and have noticed how captivated they are by the simple yet entertaining language. I was particularly touched when our youngest son (non-verbal, pictured) signed to me that the three bulls on one page were me, him and his brother. He indicated that the bull with the ring in his nose is his brother, which given their two distinctly different personalities is quite possibly an accurate prediction of things to come! As you can see the book is a hit in our home, sometimes even becoming a firm sleeping companion.
The illustrations by Neda Sadreddin are simply gorgeous, and from a parents perspective I’m always happy when ‘Only Horses Sleep with shoes on their feet’ is chosen for bedtime reading. It’s a great length, has some fun learning and teaching points and it is a pleasure to read the easy-flow rhyme. I love the page near the back where it reiterates that horses are the only animals that sleep with shoes on their feet, yet they are included in the picture amongst all the other characters of the story.
Mellissa’s book points out how different we can be without specifically mentioning clubfoot, and at the same time it’s great to see a photo of her son sleeping with his clubfoot ‘shoes’ on the inside back page.
All proceeds from the sale of this book go to ‘Sole Purpose Project’ a cause that aims to help children in the Pacific Islands receive treatment for clubfeet where it is not readily available.
To win your own copy of ‘Only Horses Sleep with shoes on their feet’ post a picture of your child with their favorite animal in the comments on the competition entry post on my Facebook page. Entries close at 8pm AEST Friday 3 June (World Clubfoot Day).
